Chicago Cubs Comeback: Dominate First Inning and Avoid Elimination

The Chicago Cubs secured a crucial 4-3 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers, extending their playoff series. The team demonstrated a remarkable ability to score in the first inning, which proved to be the key to their survival. The Cubs manager, Craig Counsell, joked that he would try to make every inning like the first, given the team’s offensive effectiveness at that stage of the game. In the third consecutive game of the series, the Cubs scored in the first inning, this time securing the victory and avoiding elimination. Leadoff hitter Michael Busch continued his hot streak, connecting on a home run to lead off the first inning. Busch became the first player in MLB history to hit a leadoff home run in two postseason games in the same series.

From the moment I was put in that position, I thought: ‘Why change what I do? Just have a good at-bat, stay aggressive, trust my eyes’.

Pete Crow-Armstrong, center fielder, also shined with the bases loaded, driving in two runs with a single. This performance propelled the Cubs to a lead they maintained until the end of the game.

I’m pretty fortunate in some of these elimination games to have pretty good opportunities in front of me with runners on base, and I think that makes this job a little easier sometimes.

The Cubs sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning, facing 53 pitches, the most for a team in the first inning of a playoff game since 1988, when pitch data began to be recorded. Despite the early lead, the Brewers struggled to get back in the game, falling short in key moments. Reliever Brad Keller shut the door in the eighth inning, striking out Jake Bauers with the bases loaded. Keller then pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the save and keep the Cubs’ season alive.

It was a lot of fun to come in and get four outs and get the win. It was a team effort. We’re looking forward to doing it again tomorrow.

With the series now 2-1 in favor of the Brewers, the fourth game is scheduled for Thursday night.
