The incident occurred when Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins hit a fly ball to center field. Correa, shortstop, was heading towards the ball while Buxton, center fielder, was running forward. Although Buxton seemed to try to stop Correa at the last moment, the collision was inevitable.

Correa had to leave the game immediately, being replaced by Jonah Bride. Buxton remained on the field until the end of the third inning, but did not return for the fourth, giving way to Ty France.

Correa, 30, had played almost every game this season, missing only three due to scheduled rest, after being limited to 86 games last season due to plantar fasciitis.

The Twins entered the game with a 10-game winning streak, which had propelled them in the competitive American League Central Division.
