Willson Contreras out of lineup after hit and frustration

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras was not in the lineup this Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies, a day after being hit in the foot by a pitch and breaking his bat in frustration.

Contreras, listed as day-to-day due to a contusion on his right foot, was hit by the sweeper of the Rockies’ starting pitcher, Kyle Freeland, in the fourth inning. Immediately afterwards, he slammed his bat against the ground and broke it at the knee.

While walking towards first base, the 33-year-old player threw the two parts of the broken bat towards the Cardinals’ dugout.

He remained in the game until the sixth inning, when he was replaced by Nolan Gorman.

The Cardinals reported that X-rays revealed no structural damage to Contreras’ foot.

Contreras has been hit by 18 pitches, the most in the National League this season, only behind Randy Arozarena and Ty France.

Contreras leads the Cardinals with 16 home runs and 65 RBIs.
