Chicago Cubs Secure Phil Maton for Two Years

The Chicago Cubs have reached a two-year agreement with right-handed reliever Phil Maton, according to sources. The agreement confirms previous reports about the pitcher’s arrival. Maton, 32 years old, played for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers in 2025, maintaining an ERA of 2.79 in 63 games. The Illinois native has a career ERA of 3.98 in nine seasons in MLB, playing for seven different teams after debuting with the San Diego Padres in 2017. Maton uses a cutter and a curveball, throwing both with the same frequency, as well as a sweeper and a sinker. Last season, he accumulated 81 strikeouts in 61⅓ innings. The Cubs are looking to rebuild their bullpen, which saw several players become free agents, including left-handers Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar, and right-hander Brad Keller. Maton will cover the need for a pitcher for the final innings, more as a setup man than as a closer, as he only has 10 saves in his career. The contract includes a club option for 2028.
