Callihan, Reds Rookie, Down with Injury

Cincinnati Reds rookie left fielder Tyler Callihan will be out of action for at least two months after undergoing surgery to repair a fracture in his left forearm.

The injury occurred on Monday night while attempting a sliding catch.

It’s really remarkable,” Reds manager Terry Francona said, adding that “everything went as expected” in the surgery, which was performed in Cincinnati.

Francona indicated that Callihan will be inactive in baseball-related activities for six to eight weeks, but he has not been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Callihan’s attempt to catch resulted in an inside-the-park home run for Matt Olson, during the Reds’ 4-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Monday night.

Callihan was playing his fourth game in the Major Leagues, after debuting last week.

The team placed Callihan on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, and also made other moves on their roster.

  • Yosver Zulueta was sent to Triple-A Louisville.
  • Jacob Hurtubise and Lyon Richardson were called up from Louisville.
  • Rhett Lowder began a rehab assignment due to a right forearm strain.

Santiago Espinal was announced as the Reds’ starter in left field for Tuesday night’s game against the Braves, with TJ Friedl in center field and Blake Dunn in right field.
