Brewers: Quintana and Megill Recover; Postseason Pitching Uncertainty

In Milwaukee, pitchers Jose Quintana and Trevor Megill are working to return from the injured list, while the Brewers define their pitching options for the postseason. Quintana made 45 pitches simulating three innings, while Megill worked the equivalent of one inning.

“I think Quintana looked fantastic,” said Brewers manager Pat Murphy.

Quintana hasn’t pitched since September 14 due to a left calf injury. Megill, the All-Star closer recovering from a right flexor strain, hasn’t played since August 24. The Brewers want Megill to pitch this weekend to prevent him from going straight from the injured list to the postseason. Whether he pitches will depend on his response on Saturday. With the National League Central Division title secured for the third consecutive year, the Brewers face uncertainty in their pitching staff due to multiple injuries. Brandon Woodruff was placed on the injured list on Sunday with a right lat strain, leaving the starting rotation uncertain for the National League Division Series, beyond Freddy Peralta and Quinn Priester. Woodruff’s participation in the postseason is uncertain. Quintana, with an 11-7 record and a 3.96 ERA, went 0-1 with a 3.14 ERA in three postseason starts with the New York Mets last season. In his last four starts before the injury, Quintana allowed 17 runs in 20 and two-thirds innings. Murphy has indicated that rookie Jacob Misiorowski likely wouldn’t be the Game 3 starter in the National League Division Series. Misiorowski performed well in his first five starts, earning him an All-Star selection, but has allowed 21 runs in 30 and a third innings since returning from the injured list in mid-August. However, it doesn’t seem like Misiorowski will be working in short relief. The Brewers will likely want Misiorowski to have essentially the same pitch counts that he has produced in a starting role. The Brewers plan to try this this weekend, having Misiorowski work multiple innings in relief. He will most likely enter on Saturday in relief of starter Robert Gasser, who will make his second appearance in the Major Leagues of the season after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

“I think it’s an important piece,” Murphy said. “I think it has great potential and enormous possibilities for us.”
