Braves Designate Craig Kimbrel for Assignment
The Atlanta Braves made the decision to designate reliever Craig Kimbrel for assignment this Saturday. Kimbrel, who has been selected to the All-Star Game nine times, is now in an uncertain situation within the organization.
Kimbrel, 37, made his season debut on Friday night. In his performance, he allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh inning during the Braves’ 5-4 loss in 10 innings against San Francisco. In that game, the right-handed pitcher gave up one walk and struck out one batter, throwing a total of 14 pitches.
Kimbrel began his career in Atlanta in 2010 and was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett before Friday’s game against the Giants. In March, he signed a minor league contract with the Braves.
Kimbrel led the National League in saves for four consecutive seasons with the Braves, from 2011 to 2014.

Throughout his career, Kimbrel has accumulated 440 saves, placing him fifth all-time. His ERA is 2.59 in 838 games (no starts) across 16 seasons, playing for eight different teams.
In a related move, Atlanta called up left-handed pitcher Austin Cox, 28, from Triple-A Gwinnett. Cox last pitched in the majors with the Kansas City Royals in 2023.
