Atlanta Braves Bolster Rotation with Erick Fedde

The Atlanta Braves have acquired veteran starting pitcher Erick Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals, both teams announced on Sunday. The deal involves a player to be named later or cash. As part of this transfer, the Cardinals will cover most of Fedde’s salary for 2025, which amounts to 7.5 million dollars. Fedde, 32 years old, will become a free agent at the end of the season. This acquisition is surprising for the Braves, who have performed below .500 and are 16.5 games behind the New York Mets, leaders of the division. However, the Braves have suffered several injuries to their starting rotation recently, including AJ Smith-Shawver (torn ulnar collateral ligament), Spencer Schwellenbach (fractured elbow), Chris Sale (fractured rib cage) and, most recently, Grant Holmes (elbow inflammation), all placed on the injured list since the beginning of June. Fedde resurfaced in South Korea in 2023, earning him a two-year, $15 million contract to return to the United States with the Chicago White Sox. In 2024, Fedde continued his success, recording a 3.30 ERA in 177⅓ innings pitched between the White Sox and the Cardinals. So far this year, the right-hander has struggled. In twenty starts, Fedde is 3-10 with an ERA of 5.22 and a WHIP of 1.51.
