After being hit on the right knee in Game 5, he hadn’t had good plate appearances in Game 6 and again early in Game 7. The Mariners continued to challenge him with fastballs, believing he couldn’t handle the velocity due to his injured knee. But in the seventh inning, Springer had a Kirk Gibson-esque moment, managing to get his legs under him enough to connect with a 96 mph fastball and hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Jays a 4-3 lead. The statistic that defined Game 7: Springer’s late home run was his 23rd postseason home run, tied with Kyle Schwarber for third all-time. What’s next for the Blue Jays: Toronto returns to the World Series for the first time in 32 years, and although the Blue Jays will be the underdogs against the Dodgers, some rival evaluators believe they have a chance against L.A. due to their ability to put the ball in play even against tough pitching.
