Bichette, out due to collision: Jays lose their star vs Yankees

The Toronto Blue Jays shortstop, Bo Bichette, was not included in the lineup for Sunday’s final game of the series against the New York Yankees. The decision was made one day after Bichette collided with Austin Wells in a play at the plate. In the sixth inning of Saturday’s 3-1 loss, Bichette was thrown out after a throw by Cody Bellinger from right field at 95.3 mph, when trying to score after a single by Nathan Lukes. After the collision with Wells’ shin guard, Bichette left the field with the help of a trainer. The game was delayed almost two hours due to the rain, and during the break, the X-rays were negative. Bichette struck out in his last at-bat on Saturday.

It didn’t look good, but we’re at the point where if you can play, you can play. Bo understands it and everyone understands it. I don’t think he needed stitches or anything, but a lot happened.

Bichette ranks third in Major League Baseball with a .311 average. This season, he has hit 18 home runs and leads Toronto with 93 RBIs in 139 games. In addition, Bichette leads the Majors with 181 hits and 44 doubles, and is batting .418 (33 of 79) during a 20-game on-base streak. Ernie Clement was the starting shortstop for the Blue Jays, who began Sunday with a three-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East Division.
