Jake Meyers Returns to Action with the Astros
The Houston Astros have activated Jake Meyers from the injured list ahead of Saturday’s game against Texas, marking the return of the center fielder after nearly two months out of action due to a calf injury. Meyers hadn’t played since July 9, when the aggravation of a right calf strain forced him to leave Houston’s game against Cleveland before the first pitch was thrown. The 29-year-old player exhibits a batting average of .308, with three home runs and 21 RBIs.Meyers, who has batted in the seventh spot in the lineup most often this season, was placed ninth in Espada’s lineup on Saturday. Espada indicated that Meyers’ situation will be evaluated “day by day”. The Astros (77-65) have had a 22-28 record since Meyers was sidelined. Entering Saturday, they led the American League West Division by 3.5 games over Seattle. In addition, Houston called up right-handed pitcher Logan Vanwey from Triple-A Sugar Land and sent left-handed pitcher Colton Gordon and outfielder Jacob Melton to Sugar Land.“Adding Jake, his defense and his offensive production that he has shown this year, stretches our lineup a little more. We are excited to have him back,” said Astros manager Joe Espada before Saturday’s game.
