Yordan Alvarez Suffers Ankle Sprain and Will Be Out for a While

Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez has been diagnosed with a “significant” sprain in his left ankle, which will keep him out of action “for a while.” This news comes at a crucial time, as Houston fights for the division title and a spot in the American League playoffs, according to manager Joe Espada on Tuesday. Espada did not provide a specific timeframe for Alvarez’s return, who still remains on the team’s active roster.

This will take some time. Day by day. I’m not going to give days, weeks, or what we’ll do next.

Joe Espada, Astros Manager
Alvarez, who underwent an MRI on Tuesday, suffered the injury while crossing the plate during Monday’s victory against the Texas Rangers. He was seen leaving the Astros’ clubhouse on crutches and with a boot on his left foot. The All-Star appeared to slip while crossing the plate in the first inning, scoring from first base due to a throwing error by Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter on a single by Carlos Correa. Alvarez was attended to by an athletic trainer outside the Astros dugout and then was helped down the stairs. Before this injury, Alvarez was batting .273 with six home runs and 27 RBIs. His participation in the game was limited to 48 games due to a fracture in his right hand that forced him to miss 101 games. As Tuesday began, Houston was half a game behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West. The Astros have a three-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians and the Texas Rangers for the last American League Wild Card spot.
