JACKSON, Miss. – Golfer Vince Whaley had an adrenaline-pumping moment during the Sanderson Farms Championship, facing an unusual situation on the course. As he prepared to execute a shot, an alligator approximately six feet long watched him closely. The incident occurred on the 11th hole, a par 5, where Whaley had to play a ball from the water. Despite the presence of the reptile, the golfer remained calm and managed to save par. Whaley estimated that the alligator was about 20 feet away when he made the shot from the bank. The player was aware of the animal’s presence, which kept its head out of the water, staring at him.

“Fortunately, I turned my back so I could focus on the shot for a second,” Whaley commented, adding that he had “a lot of confidence” in his caddie, who was monitoring the situation.

The caiman remained still throughout the process. Whaley managed to get the ball out, which fell short of the putting area, and managed to complete the par. He finished the day with a card of 67 strokes, tying for third position. When asked what the plan would have been if the alligator had moved, Whaley responded with humor:

“The plan was to run out of the water”.
