Tiger Woods Undergoes His Seventh Back Surgery
The renowned golfer Tiger Woods has undergone his seventh back surgery, this time to replace a disc in his lower back that was causing him pain and mobility issues. Woods announced the news through his social media, informing that the surgery was performed on Friday in New York. In his post, Woods stated that this was the right decision for his health and to address the recurring problems in his back. Woods did not specify how long he will be off the courts, which creates uncertainty about his possible participation in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas or the PNC Championship alongside his son, Charlie, both tournaments scheduled for December. This surgery is in addition to another intervention carried out in March, following a rupture in the left Achilles tendon, and is the second back surgery in the last 13 months. After experiencing pain and loss of mobility in his back, Woods consulted doctors and surgeons. Studies revealed a collapsed disc at L4/5, disc fragments, and a compromised spinal canal. The first of Woods’ seven back surgeries was in April 2014, which led to a fusion in his lower back in 2017. A year later, he won the Tour Championship and in 2019 conquered his 15th major and his fifth green jacket at the Masters. In February 2021, Woods suffered a car accident that fractured his right leg and ankle, a situation that, according to him, almost resulted in amputation. Woods returned to golf a year later, participating in the 2022 Masters. Since the accident, Woods has played only 15 times in the last four years, including four appearances at the PNC Championship, where he can use a cart for the 36-hole event.“I opted to replace my disc yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back,” Woods wrote in his post.
