Annika Sorenstam Leads the U.S. Senior Women’s Open

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Golfer Annika Sorenstam positioned herself at the top of the U.S. Senior Women’s Open after a standout first round at the San Diego Country Club. Sorenstam completed the course with a score of 70 strokes, three under par. The veteran golfer, who already conquered the tournament in 2021, has left an indelible mark on the history of women’s golf. Among her achievements are her victories in the U.S. Women’s Open in 1995, 1996 and 2006. At 54 years old, the Swede has an impressive record of 72 titles on the LPGA Tour.

“I am very happy with the first round. I felt quite solid from tee to green. I think I ended up with some good approach shots on the right side of the flag, which is very helpful on this course,” expressed Sorenstam.

In the standings, Moira Dunn-Bohls was one stroke away, accompanied by amateur Lara Tennant and 72-year-old Barb Moxness, who surpassed her own age. Trish Johnson, the 2023 champion, and Corina Kelepouris, also stayed close, recording a score of 72. Karrie Webb, in her tournament debut, signed a card of 73 strokes.

“I definitely felt the nerves and the anxiety, and it’s a field where you don’t know if you ever really feel comfortable,” said Webb, 50.

Juli Inkster completed the round with 75 strokes, highlighting an impressive 50-foot eagle putt on the 10th hole, a par 5.
