Scottie Scheffler: The Historical Favorite at the 2025 U.S. Open

Despite the difficulty of the course and the demands of the tournament, bookmakers have positioned Scottie Scheffler as the main favorite for the 125th U.S. Open. His low odds have not deterred bettors, who are backing him massively. According to betting odds, Scheffler is listed at +275 to win the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. This makes him the most prominent favorite for a men’s golf major since Tiger Woods had odds of +225 or less in 2009, although he didn’t win any of those tournaments. Scheffler surpasses his own major odds of +325 that he had at the 2024 U.S. Open, where he ultimately tied for 41st place. The low probability and the history of big favorites do not scare the betting public: it is reported that more than 50% of the betting volume and 22.6% of the bets back Scheffler to win at Oakmont.

Scheffler’s price at the start of the tournament week reflects his consistent performances, his ability to excel in the majors, and the great interest he generates in betting tournament after tournament, regardless of how favored he is.

In the U.S. Open market, Scheffler opened at +500 and continuously lowered his odds thanks to his good performance in the first half of 2025, reaching +400 after winning the PGA Championship and +300 after his victory at the Memorial Tournament. Despite the great support, Scheffler’s low odds mean that it is not an unfavorable scenario for bookmakers if he wins the third major of his career. Besides Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, the second favorite at +750, is also receiving significant public support in the market, with over 15% of the betting volume at several major bookmakers. The current U.S. Open champion has seen his odds nearly halved since opening at +1400. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy’s odds have increased considerably due to his poor performance: after winning The Masters in April, the 36-year-old player was +550 to win the U.S. Open, but fell to +1150 after missing the cut at the Canadian Open and is currently at +1400. The only other golfers attracting some attention in the betting market are Jon Rahm (+1200), Ludvig Åberg (+2200), Collin Morikawa (+2500), Shane Lowry (+3300), and Harris English (+8000). Bookmakers attribute part of the attraction to the favorites to the reported difficulty of Oakmont, which produced winning results of -4 and +5 the last two times the U.S. Open was held there.
