Victor Perez Achieves a Historic Hole-in-One at the US Open

French golfer Victor Perez made history at the U.S. Open by recording the second ace in the history of the tournament held at Oakmont Country Club. Perez achieved the feat on the 6th hole, a par 3, during the second round of the championship. From a distance of 192 yards, Perez used a 7-iron to hit the ball. The ball bounced three times before rolling about three feet towards the hole. The golfer celebrated with his caddie, James Erkenbeck, and subsequently with his playing partners, Jacob Bridgeman and Adam Schenk. The only other ace recorded at the U.S. Open at Oakmont was achieved by Scott Simpson on the 16th hole during the first round of 1983.
Perez, a graduate of the University of New Mexico, needed the ace to get back to 1 over par. He started the day with that score, but suffered a triple bogey on the 12th hole, his third hole of the day. After a drive into a fairway bunker, he needed four strokes to reach the green and three putts for an 8. Perez recovered with consecutive birdies on holes 16 and 17, before making a bogey on the 18th hole to reach the turn at 2 over par 37. After making another bogey on the 3rd hole, he holed a 5-foot putt for birdie on the fifth. Perez, currently ranked 99th in the world, has never made the cut at a U.S. Open. He missed the weekend in five consecutive major appearances before this week.
