Joe Pavelski Leads the American Century Championship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Former NHL player Joe Pavelski took the lead at the American Century Championship in Edgewood Tahoe after the first round this Friday. Pavelski accumulated 23 points under the modified Stableford system.

“The round was good,” commented Pavelski, who finished second last year, behind former tennis player Mardy Fish. “Obviously, the excitement of the first tee and the first round was present. The nerves were also there.”

Vinny Del Negro, former NBA player and coach and winner of the tournament in 2021, was one point away. Stephen Curry, star of the Golden State Warriors and champion in 2023, was one point behind Del Negro, with 21 points, tied with former soccer player Taylor Twellman. Adam Thielen, Carolina Panthers receiver, scored 19 points, while Tony Romo, former NFL quarterback and three-time winner, achieved 18 points, tied with Alex Caruso, Oklahoma City Thunder player. Fish, also a winner in 2020, accumulated 17 points, sharing position with John Smoltz, former pitcher, and Annika Sorenstam, former LPGA Tour star. Charles Barkley achieved an eagle from 88 yards on hole 2, a par 4, scoring nine points in the round. He ranked 24th among the 90 participants.

“I had a great day today,” Barkley declared. “I had a lot of fun. I played with Nate Bargatze and Larry the Cable Guy, two of the best guys. I’ve put in a lot of time and effort, and I’m very happy with my performance today.”

Curry played alongside his father, Dell, and his brother, Seth.

“Obviously, it was fun playing with my dad and my brother, with the matching outfits and everything, creating the right atmosphere,” Stephen Curry said. “For as average as I think I played, I kept the numbers up, which allows you to stay relevant. Excited for tomorrow.”
