The Open Championship Keeps its Prize Money at $17 Million
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – The prestigious The Open Championship tournament has decided to maintain the prize money at $17 million for this edition. This decision marks the first time since 2012 that the R&A, the governing organization of the event, has chosen not to increase the total amount allocated to the prizes.
The U.S. Open also followed a similar line, without increasing its prize money in the Oakmont edition.
The winner this week at Royal Portrush will pocket $3.1 million, the same amount that Xander Schauffele earned last year at Royal Troon.
In recent years, the four Majors had experienced a gradual increase in their prize money. The Masters increased its prize fund by $1 million, reaching a total of $21 million. The PGA Championship, for its part, increased by $500,000, reaching $19 million.
The U.S. Open maintained its prize money at $21.5 million, solidifying itself as the Major with the highest purse.
This scenario underscores that the most important championships transcend the economic aspect, focusing on the search for the green jacket and the Claret Jug.
The Players Championship, a prominent PGA Tour event, boasts a prize pool of $25 million. Likewise, the PGA Tour’s flagship events and tournaments funded by LIV Golf in Saudi Arabia also offer prize pools of $20 million.
