Sebastián Muñoz makes history in LIV Golf with a round of 59, despite a double bogey

Sebastián Muñoz achieved a remarkable feat in the world of golf by recording the third round under 60 in the short history of LIV Golf. What was surprising about his performance was that it included a double bogey. Muñoz holed a short putt for birdie, achieving an impressive 59, twelve under par, at the LIV event held at The Club at Chatham Hills, outside of Indianapolis. After the first round, he positioned himself three strokes ahead of Dustin Johnson. The Colombian had a stumble on the 5th hole, a par 4, where he suffered a double bogey after two penalty strokes. However, he reacted spectacularly, getting birdies on 13 of the last 14 holes. He finished with a wedge approach that left the ball a few feet from the hole, and then made the putt on the 1st hole, a par 4 (he started on the 2nd hole due to the shotgun format). With this exceptional round, Muñoz joins Joaquín Niemann and Bryson DeChambeau as the only LIV Golf players who have achieved a score below 60 since the circuit began in 2022.

Amazing round,” Muñoz commented. “I started par-par-birdie, feeling normal, trying to go under. Then, that double bogey hits me, but I stayed positive. I made a couple of birdies and tried to make a run, and we got eight in a row. When I looked, I had cameras on me and I figured it was possible, I just had to birdie. I made a great putt on holes 17 and 18 to keep going, and then a great wedge shot here on 1 to finish.

Of the 15 rounds under 60 in PGA Tour history, none have included a double bogey. The same goes for the Korn Ferry Tour, which has also had 15 rounds under 60.

Muñoz is in seventh place in this season’s LIV Golf player rankings. The individual champion will be crowned this weekend. Muñoz, along with Jon Rahm and Carlos Ortiz, are the only players in the top 10 who have not yet achieved victories this year.
