The excitement of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs is just around the corner, starting next week with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. However, a notable absence will mark the beginning of the tournament: the world number 2, Rory McIlroy, will not participate. The defending Masters champion is not on the list of players for the St. Jude, published Friday by the PGA Tour. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings after this week’s Wyndham Championship will secure their place in the event, meaning McIlroy’s absence will reduce the field in Memphis, Tennessee, to 69 players next week. McIlroy had a lackluster performance last year at the St. Jude, finishing in second-to-last place. It should be noted that he has never achieved a victory in this tournament. He had already announced his decision not to compete this year.

“I practically finished last this year there, and I only dropped one place in the playoff standings,” McIlroy commented.

The TelegraphDespite his absence from the St. Jude, McIlroy, currently second in the FedEx Cup standings, behind Scottie Scheffler, has already secured his place among the top 50 who will advance to the BMW Championship the following week. The playoffs will culminate with the Tour Championship, where the top 30 players in the FedEx standings will compete for the title. McIlroy’s last appearance in a tournament was two weeks ago, where he achieved a tie for seventh place in the Open Championship.
