Rasmus Højgaard Wins Danish Golf Championship

Golfer Rasmus Højgaard delighted his fans and strengthened his position for the Ryder Cup by taking the lead at the Danish Golf Championship on Friday. Højgaard added a card of 64 strokes, seven under par, to his initial round of 66 at the Fureso Golf Club, which allowed him to lead halfway through the tournament in his country. The 24-year-old Danish player is currently in eighth place on the Ryder Cup points list for the European team, just below the top six places that qualify directly. Luke Donald, team captain, will make six captain’s picks after the Betfred British Masters on August 24.

One feeds off the other a bit. Obviously, I felt good out there. I was trying to make as many birdies as possible, and with them cheering me on, I just wanted to keep going like that for as long as possible.

Højgaard, who started on the 10th hole, began with six consecutive pars before achieving a birdie on the 16th and an eagle on the par 5 of the 18th, after leaving his approach shot a meter away. A streak of five birdies in the first six holes of his second round gave him a cushion at the top. Højgaard’s only bogey on the 8th hole prevented him from setting the course record, matching Marco Penge’s first-round score.

I didn’t try to do too much out there. I was just hitting the ball well, had an idea of where it was going and created a lot of opportunities.

Penge is two strokes away, at 10 under par, after a round of 68 that included six birdies and three bogeys, while Canadian Aaron Cockerill is in third place, three strokes further back. Adrien Saddier, Maximilian Steinlechner, and Niklas Norgaard are in a group with 6 under par. Scottish Marc Warren dropped down the leaderboard with a disappointing second round of 74 after his initial 66, with five of his seven bogeys on the second lap, while Englishman Matt Wallace eagled the last hole for a 70 and made the cut at 1 under par.
