Tommy Fleetwood Breaks the Drought and Conquers the Tour Championship

English golfer Tommy Fleetwood finally tasted victory on the PGA Tour, ending a long wait filled with frustration and bittersweet moments. Fleetwood achieved his first win on the American circuit by finishing the Tour Championship with a score of 2 under par (68 strokes), solidifying an impressive total of 18 under par at East Lake Golf Club. This achievement, reached in his 164th PGA Tour appearance, puts him ahead of Russell Henley and Patrick Cantlay, who finished in second place. In addition to his outstanding performance, Fleetwood took home the coveted FedEx Cup and a $10 million prize, marking a milestone in his career.

I think it shows the great attitude he has towards the game, how resilient he is.

Despite his seven victories on the DP World Tour and three other international titles, Fleetwood had not managed to lift a trophy at a PGA Tour event until this Sunday. His persistence and dedication were rewarded, demonstrating his tenacity on the course. Before his victory at the Tour Championship, Fleetwood had come close on multiple occasions. He accumulated 30 top-5 finishes without wins, the most on the PGA Tour in the last 100 years. His earnings of $33.4 million also represented the most for a winless golfer on the circuit. In recent months, Fleetwood has come close to winning on two occasions. At the Travelers Championship, he led by one stroke on the 72nd hole, but a three-putt cost him the victory. At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he led by two strokes with three holes to play, but finished in third place. In the Tour Championship, Fleetwood remained calm and focused. Despite a bogey on the 10th hole, he reacted with birdies on the 12th and 13th holes, regaining his lead. With a three-stroke lead on the 18th hole, he sealed his historic victory. Fleetwood became the first golfer to earn his first Tour Championship victory at East Lake. Scottie Scheffler, world number 1, struggled from the start and couldn’t repeat his success from last year. Scheffler finished in a tie for fourth place, along with Corey Conners and Cameron Young.

I fought all week to give myself a chance. I wasn’t as sharp as I hoped. I had a good first round, but other than that, I didn’t play my best golf the first few days. I still gave myself a chance. I just needed a few better shots.

Keegan Bradley, captain of the American Ryder Cup team, also had a difficult day. Bradley will announce his six selections for the Ryder Cup on Wednesday, calling the decision the “most important of his life”.

I think, whatever I do, I could have easily gone the other way, no matter what. The only thing that matters to me is that on Sunday of the Ryder Cup we win the Ryder Cup. Then I will know that I made the right decision.

The Ryder Cup, which will be played next month at Bethpage Black, will feature Bradley as captain.
