Charlie Woods Closes the Junior PGA Championship with a 74

Charlie Woods, son of the legendary Tiger Woods, finished his participation in the Junior PGA Championship with a round of 3 over par, a 74, on Friday. This result took him away from the possibility of obtaining one of the two spots for the American team of the Junior Ryder Cup. Woods, 16, started the day tied for second with a cumulative score of 12 under par after three rounds at the Ackerman-Allen Course of the Brick Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana. However, he failed to keep up the pace in the final round. He started at par and then suffered a bogey on the 14th hole and a double bogey on the 15th. Finally, Woods tied for ninth place with a total of 9 under par. Lunden Esterline, hailing from Kansas and committed to Auburn for 2027, took the championship with an impressive total of 19 under par. In addition to the title, he secured one of the two spots for the Junior Ryder Cup team. Giuseppe Puebla, who finished with 13 under par, earned the other spot. The United States team will face the European team from September 23 to 25 at the Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black in New York. Woods could still be selected as the captain’s only choice next week, but, given his number 20 position in the American Junior Golf Association ranking, this possibility seems remote. Woods has never competed in this event. Rising student at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Florida, Woods won the AJGA’s Team TaylorMade Invitational in May. He did not make the cut at the recent U.S. Junior Amateur. In the women’s division, Asterisk Talley was crowned Junior PGA champion by one stroke over Zoe Cusack.
