Verstappen, From Brilliance to Controversy in the Spanish Grand Prix
The Spanish Grand Prix left a bittersweet taste for Max Verstappen. While the Dutch driver has demonstrated his indisputable talent on the track, an incident at the end of the race overshadowed his performance, generating debate and controversy in the world of Formula 1.
Verstappen’s brilliance, which was evident in the first part of the race in Barcelona, was marred by an apparent outburst of anger in the final laps. The Red Bull team asked him to yield the position to George Russell of Mercedes, which triggered a series of events that ended with contact between both drivers.
“Oh my God!” exclaimed Charles Leclerc, upon seeing the replay of the incident between Verstappen and Russell. Oscar Piastri, the race winner, simply said: “Wow.” Lando Norris joked that he had already done something similar, although “in Mario Kart.”
Statements from the drivers in the waiting room.
Many in the paddock considered the incident intentional, a moment of “red rage” that culminated in an impulsive and questionable decision. When asked if it was intentional, Verstappen responded with a laconic “Does it matter?”.
Verstappen’s response, four-time world champion, did not satisfy many. George Russell did not hesitate to express his opinion on the Dutchman’s action. “It was very deliberate, to be honest… It’s a shame because Max is clearly one of the best drivers in the world, but maneuvers like that are totally unnecessary and detract from his value. It’s a shame for all the young people who aspire to be Formula 1 drivers.”
The former driver and now commentator, Nico Rosberg, was even more forceful, suggesting that Verstappen’s action deserved a disqualification. Verstappen received a 10-second penalty, which relegated him to tenth place and added three points to his superlicense, leaving him just one point away from a possible race suspension.

The incident reignited the discussion about Verstappen’s “dark” side on the track, contrasting with his undeniable talent and memorable performances. The conversation about his racing style will be a topic of debate at the next Canadian Grand Prix.
Verstappen’s frustration had been increasing before the crash with Russell. The Red Bull team, anticipating a possible order from the stewards to concede the position, requested Verstappen to do so. The FIA clarified that it had no intention of issuing such an order. Red Bull’s decision to put hard tires on Verstappen in the last stop left him vulnerable to attacks from Leclerc and Russell, who were on soft tires.

Before the incident, Verstappen’s frustration was noted. He criticized the deficiencies of this year’s Red Bull car and did not hesitate to defend his teammate Yuki Tsunoda. These statements suggest a discomfort that could have consequences beyond the sporting realm.

Although he has a contract until 2028, rumors about a possible departure of Verstappen from Red Bull are increasingly strong. Speculation about Aston Martin’s interest in the driver and a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave if he is not among the top four in the championship by August. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff watched the incident closely. Russell has not yet signed a contract with Mercedes beyond 2025, and Wolff has always expressed his desire to have Verstappen on his team.
Wolff, without taking sides, avoided criticizing Verstappen, showing a caution that suggests the complexity of the panorama in the world of Formula 1.
