George Russell Grabs Pole From Verstappen in Canada
MONTREAL – Mercedes driver George Russell secured a stellar spot on the front row of the Canadian Grand Prix, surpassing Max Verstappen in qualifying.
Russell waited until the last moment of the qualifying session to beat the world champion’s fastest time by 0.16 seconds.
Verstappen had briefly led the timesheet, after having overtaken the championship leader, Oscar Piastri, moments before.
Russell’s return means he will start ahead of Verstappen, just two weeks after their incident at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Verstappen collided with Russell’s car in Barcelona, a maneuver he later admitted “was not correct”.
The incident left Verstappen on the verge of a race suspension, as it brought him to 11 penalty points, one away from the limit.George Russell took his sixth pole position and the second consecutive one at the Canadian Grand Prix.
