Russell Confident in Performance and Aims for Championship with Mercedes

George Russell expressed his confidence in his current performance, highlighting his preparation to fight for the Formula 1 championship with Mercedes. After obtaining the first victory of the season for the team in Canada, the British driver is optimistic, although he acknowledges that the path to the title this year could be complicated. Russell, whose contract ends in 2025, feels confident about his permanence in the team. He acknowledges that any chance of fighting for the title this season will depend in part on mistakes and loss of points by the McLaren drivers. In the Montreal Grand Prix, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, both from McLaren, suffered an incident that forced Norris to retire from the race. Piastri, for his part, managed to extend his lead in the championship. Russell is currently in fourth position in the overall standings, 62 points behind Piastri. Max Verstappen, of Red Bull, is in third place.

I don’t really know how Max and I are so close to those two McLaren drivers, as they clearly have the most dominant car.

Russell highlighted the consistency of the Mercedes team, achieving the maximum possible result in each race. However, he acknowledges that McLaren could improve their performance and avoid mistakes in the future. The British driver is confident that Sunday’s result will help in negotiations for a new contract, despite rumors of a possible move by Verstappen to Mercedes.

Russell stated that he felt at his best and ready to fight for the world championship. In addition, he assured that he is not negotiating with any other team and that his priority is to remain at Mercedes. The Mercedes driver also mentioned that there are no tensions in the conversations about possible moves, especially in relation to Max Verstappen. Russell and his teammate, the young Kimi Antonelli, who finished third in Sunday’s race, are doing their job, and therefore, he sees no reason to change something that is working.
