Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, has assured that they will not give up in the fight for the Formula 1 championship until the mathematics dictate otherwise for Max Verstappen. This statement comes after Christian Horner’s departure as team principal and the appointment of Laurent Mekies. In his first statements after the leadership change, Marko dismissed any suggestion that the team might be shifting its focus towards the 2026 season.

Christian and I have worked together very successfully for over 20 years, both in Formula 1 and Formula 3000. I would like to sincerely thank Christian for that.

Helmut Marko
Marko highlighted the achievements made during the collaboration with Horner, including the development of two world champion drivers and multiple Grand Prix winners.

Regarding the current sporting situation: there are still twelve races to go, and we will continue fighting for the drivers’ championship as long as it is mathematically possible.

These statements contrast with Verstappen’s previous ones, who had shown pessimism about his chances in defending the title. Marko, in previous statements, even suggested that the team might have to “give up” the title if things didn’t improve. In Thursday’s statements, no mention was made of the constructors’ standings, where Red Bull is behind McLaren. Mekies, on his first day as team principal, faces the task of reversing a disappointing season.

I see this team as most people outside see it, we see the best people in the world in what they do.

Laurent Mekies
Mekies praised the talent and ability of the Red Bull team, highlighting their reputation as one of the most competitive teams.

It’s a privilege to join the team and the focus will be on ensuring that all the talented people here have what they need to perform at their best, because they already are the best.

Laurent Mekies
Mekies acknowledged the challenges they face, but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome them together.
