Oscar Piastri, with eight podium finishes and five victories, leads the championship with a 10-point advantage.
Oscar Piastri could make history at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, becoming the only Australian with six or more wins in a Formula 1 season. At 24 years old, the driver has even bigger goals.
Only Jack Brabham and Alan Jones, both world champions, achieved five victories in the same year. However, their achievements reflect an era with fewer races compared to the current 24.
Piastri, who leads his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, by 10 points in the championship, has won five of the nine races held and has been on the podium in the last eight.
It wouldn’t surprise anyone to see the calm driver on the top step of the podium at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal on Sunday.
It’s a good statistic, but I’d rather be world champion. Winning five races in nine is more than I expected, even with a very competitive car.
Piastri hopes Montreal follows the season’s trend, with McLaren winning seven of the nine races and Max Verstappen of Red Bull the other two.
The driver also anticipates strong competition from Mercedes.
Piastri, who qualified fourth in Canada last year, finished fifth, while his teammate was second.
“Ironically, the races that were bad for me last year have been the best so far, and some of the ones that were good haven’t been great,” he commented.
“I’m hoping for a good weekend… I’ve felt very comfortable with the car all year and I think I’m in a good moment, so I hope to be strong,” he concluded.
