Norris isn’t surprised by Red Bull’s resurgence and anticipates the fight with Verstappen

Lando Norris, McLaren driver, has expressed that Red Bull’s recent performance in the last races should not be a surprise, as he prepares to face Max Verstappen in the fight for the championship. After Verstappen’s consecutive victories in Azerbaijan and Italy, the defending champion has closed in on the top of the standings, sitting just 44 points behind Norris. Verstappen’s victory at Monza broke a streak of eight races without a win, where he only achieved two podium finishes, which generated a detailed analysis of Red Bull’s performance.

It’s not common for them to be slow, so I think people need to stop being surprised that they’re fast.

Norris highlighted that Verstappen was already winning races at the beginning of the season and that Red Bull’s performance has been consistent. Furthermore, he mentioned that the team introduced upgrades in Monza that seem to have helped them improve even more. The McLaren driver, who has been competing with teammate Oscar Piastri during the 2025 season, is 25 points behind the Australian in the standings. Norris acknowledged that McLaren struggled in the last two races in Baku and Monza, which seemed to favor Red Bull’s strengths. The Briton added that Red Bull will make things difficult for them for the rest of the season, but they are also aware of their own areas for improvement. Norris also spoke about his weekend at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which was affected by a chaotic qualifying session. He mentioned that, despite this, the team’s overall pace was not bad and that, under normal conditions, he could have achieved a better result in the race. The McLaren driver concluded that, although they have had an outstanding season, they still have areas in which they need to improve to compete with Red Bull.
