Herta Evade Rumors F2: IndyCar to Formula 2?

3 Min Read

Colton Herta has avoided addressing rumors about his possible move from IndyCar to Formula 1. The driver declined to comment on the speculation on three occasions on Tuesday, focusing on the points needed to obtain the super license that would allow him to compete in the global series. The IndyCar championship heads to its season finale at Nashville Superspeedway this weekend, with several driver contracts still unresolved. Among them, Will Power, two-time IndyCar champion, stands out, whose future at Team Penske is uncertain. It is speculated that he could replace Herta at Andretti Global, if the team owner, Dan Towriss, decides to send Herta to F2 to obtain his superlicense. The Towriss group owns the new Cadillac F1 team, which on Tuesday announced Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez as their drivers for the 2026 season. The F1 project began in 2021 under the direction of Michael Andretti, who had reserved a seat for Herta, with the intention of creating a completely American team. However, after four seasons, Herta still hasn’t obtained the super license and wasn’t eligible for one of the Cadillac seats.

“I have no comment on any of that, to be honest,” Herta told The Associated Press.

When asked if by not denying the rumors she was allowing them to continue, Herta evaded the question again.

“Yes, but it also makes people talk about me more,” Herta replied. “Maybe it will even increase my value a little.”

Herta also diverted attention for the third time by changing the subject. When Towriss was asked about Herta during the F1 lineup announcement, he pointed out that Herta was not an option due to the super license. When asked specifically if he was trying to move Herta to an F2 team, Towriss said: “That’s not what we’re reporting today.” This response contrasted notably with the one Towriss gave about reports that he was interested in hiring former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner for Cadillac.

“There have been no conversations with Christian Horner. There are no plans for that,” Towriss said. “I would like to officially deny that rumor.”

Herta, 25, is in his seventh IndyCar season and has nine career wins. He finished second in the standings last year, his best result to date, but arrives at the final without wins and is sixth in points, behind his Andretti Global teammate, Kyle Kirkwood. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Álex Palou already secured the title two races ago.
