Verstappen Laments Missed Opportunity in Singapore

Max Verstappen expressed his frustration after qualifying in Singapore, where he secured second place on the grid, just 0.182 seconds behind George Russell, who achieved pole position. The Red Bull driver felt that proximity to Lando Norris affected his performance in the final sector of his last lap. Verstappen, who was only 0.05 seconds off the pole position before encountering the dirty air generated by Norris’ McLaren, experienced understeer at Turn 15, forcing him to abort his lap exiting Turn 16.

“That’s what happens when there’s a car in front of you, just cruising, only two seconds away,” Verstappen commented, referring to Norris.

Norris, who qualified in fifth place, was heading to the pits after completing his last attempt in Q3. Verstappen, who waited until the last moment for his final lap, pointed out that drivers on slow laps are aware of the importance of giving space to cars on fast laps in Singapore due to the impact of dirty air.

“The S-turn itself was going well, but it’s very difficult to nail all the corners here,” said Verstappen. “Unfortunately, I had a car two seconds ahead of me in the last chicane.”

The Dutch driver added that he had to abort the lap due to that situation and regretted that, otherwise, the battle for first place would have been very close. When asked if he would speak to Norris about the incident, Verstappen replied that it was not necessary, as the situation was clear. Norris, for his part, was puzzled by Verstappen’s comments, stating that he was not aware of any problem at that moment. The story continues…
