Alex Dunne to Debut in Formula 1 with McLaren in Austria

McLaren development driver Alex Dunne will get his first experience in Formula 1 by participating in the first free practice session (FP1) of the Austrian Grand Prix. This opportunity will allow him to demonstrate his talent behind the wheel of the MCL39. Dunne, 19, currently competes in Formula 2 with Rodin Motorsport. His addition to McLaren’s Formula 1 young driver program was finalized in 2024. In addition to his role in Formula 2, Dunne is also a reserve driver for the McLaren Formula E team. According to FIA regulations, teams are required to include a young driver in two practice sessions per car throughout the season. Reserve driver Pato O’Ward will participate in the first practice session at the Mexican Grand Prix in October. Two additional announcements are expected regarding young drivers who will have the opportunity to drive in other races.

It’s an incredible opportunity to be able to drive during FP1 in Austria. I’m really looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the MCL39 and supporting the team with the setup for the race weekend.

Lando Norris, currently in second place in the drivers’ championship, will sit this one out. Norris is 22 points behind his teammate, Oscar Piastri. McLaren, leader of the constructors’ championship, arrives at the eleventh round in Austria with a 175-point lead.
