Alonso Celebrates Newey’s New Position at Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso has expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment of Adrian Newey as team principal of Aston Martin. The driver believes that this step is “the normal logical step” for the team to reach the world championship in the future. The official announcement came after Newey joined Aston Martin in early 2025 as a shareholder and technical managing partner. This change in leadership also implies a relocation of Andy Cowell, who previously led the successful Mercedes engine program in the 2010s. Cowell will now focus on the power unit area, overseeing the upcoming partnership with Honda. Newey’s arrival comes after a challenging season for Aston Martin, which currently occupies eighth place in the championship despite significant investments by owner Lawrence Stroll in a new factory and a high-level technical team.Alonso emphasized that this leadership change is a natural and logical step towards 2026. He highlighted the combination of talent in the team, with Newey in charge of the chassis and the team, and Cowell focused on engine integration, in addition to the strong leadership of Lawrence Stroll. The Asturian driver also highlighted Stroll’s determination and commitment, pointing out that the team is in good hands and anticipating better performance in 2026.That’s good news. I was already managing the technical development of the car, but also the team, supervising the necessary people and taking care of the areas we needed to reinforce and which ones were less important. So, in a way, I was already doing a lot of internal management.

Newey will become the third team principal of Aston Martin in recent seasons. Alonso believes these changes are natural in the project the team has undertaken. He highlighted the strong unity within the team and the process of building something special for the coming years, now with a new factory, a wind tunnel, and the incorporation of key figures to make the team as efficient as possible. With Adrian, there is only one style, which is performance. There is only the unlimited search for performance and perfection.
