Cameron Green: The New Promise of Australian Cricket Debuts in Adelaide

Western Australia’s young all-rounder, 21-year-old Cameron Green, is set to make his debut for Australia at the Adelaide Oval. His anticipated debut has generated great expectation in the cricket world.

A Promising Career

Green’s trajectory in first-class cricket has been outstanding. He has five centuries in 21 matches, including a career-high of 197 runs earlier this season against New South Wales. His batting average is 55.04. He demonstrated his potential with the bat in a match against Queensland at the Gabba in November 2019, scoring 87 and 121 runs not out, batting in positions 8 and 9. In terms of bowling, he averages 21.72 with 33 wickets, including 5 for 24 in his first-class debut against Tasmania. Although his career in limited-format matches doesn’t stand out as much, he debuted in ODIs a few weeks ago. It’s with the red (and pink) ball that he’s generating more enthusiasm.

Great Expectations

“For me, Cameron Green is the next Australian cricket superstar. He is a genuine prospect with the bat and ball, but I think his future lies as a batsman who can offer some quality overs. Cameron is a batsman with uncommon talent. At 6 feet 7 inches, he could become something very special.”

Greg Chappell
Greg Chappell has called him the “best since Ricky Ponting”. Green is expected to play at number 6 in the Test team. Chappell believes Green’s long-term position is number 4.

The Concern About the Injury

Green suffered a blow to the head from a Jasprit Bumrah delivery at the SCG. He was retired hurt with concussion, but scans ruled out fractures. Fortunately, he did not suffer major damage and it appears he will comply with Cricket Australia’s protocols to debut.

The Dream Off-Roader?

Green has had restrictions on his bowling due to a stress fracture in his back. He has worked on his action with WA bowling coach Matt Mason and has been limited to four-over spells. However, he has shown his ability to take wickets. Tim Paine suggested that bowling restrictions will be relaxed. “I think he’ll bowl a few more, once you’re selected in a Test match, you’re ready to go. That being said, we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs with the attack we have.”

An Early Debut?

In a way, yes. A few weeks ago it seemed unlikely that he would be part of the team at the start of the series, despite having been included in the extended squad. Plans changed due to injuries to Warner and Pucovksi, which led Australia to reorganize the batting order, creating an opportunity at number 6. Despite this, Green is deserving of selection for his batting.
