Ben Whittaker achieved a devastating knockout in the first round against Benjamin Gavazi on Saturday, in his debut with Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn’s promoter. The fight took place in Birmingham, England.
Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KOs) didn’t take long to demonstrate his superiority in the fight. He used his jab left to control the fight, working Gavazi’s (19-2, 13 KOs) head and body. The Briton’s speed proved to be a key factor.
The German was knocked down by a powerful right hand from Whittaker, which culminated an effective combination midway through the first round. The situation made the outcome clear.
Whittaker launched into the attack, connecting a left hook followed by another right hand that hit squarely, ending the fight before all the attendees could take their seats at the NEC in Birmingham.
Gavazi, visibly affected, recovered and stood up, apparently in good condition.Whittaker, accompanied by British artist Dizzee Rascal, generated enthusiasm among the audience with his entrance to the ring.
The 28-year-old boxer acknowledged the importance of backing up his flashy entrance, and delivered a resounding knockout against an experienced opponent, in his first fight since April.
He was a brave boy [Gavazi], with 20 fights, he only lost one. He came to change his life, but as I said, I showed something special, and I proved why I am different.
