Vergil Ortiz Jr. to Defend WBC Interim Title Against Erickson Lubin

On November 8th, Vergil Ortiz Jr. (23-0, 21 KOs) will return to the ring to defend his WBC interim super welterweight title. The fight will be against Erickson Lubin and will take place at the Dickies Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The announcement was made by Golden Boy Promotions. The fight will be broadcast live worldwide via DAZN, promising a night full of action for fans. Ortiz, known for his power, will fight at home after a decision victory over Israil Madrimov in February.

I’m always happy to be part of the fights that the fans want to see.

Although this fight was not the one Ortiz initially sought, the situation led to this confrontation with Lubin. Ortiz, 27 years old, had expressed his interest in facing the WBO champion, Xander Zayas. There was an exchange of comments on social media and a formal offer to Zayas’ promoter, Top Rank, with a deadline to accept. However, no agreement was reached, which led Ortiz’s management to secure the fight with Lubin. There were also rumors of a possible fight between Ortiz and Jaron “Boots” Ennis in 2026, but Ortiz’s representation denied that an agreement existed.

Golden Boy tried to contact all the important opponents available to us and nobody wanted to fight Vergil. Even His Excellency (Turki Alalshikh) offered ‘Boots’ a life-changing amount of money and he said no to a tune-up fight. Vergil Ortiz is the most feared man in boxing. Credit has to be given to Lubin for doing what nobody else would do.

Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs), currently ranked number 1 by the IBF in super welterweight, comes into this fight with three consecutive victories. His last defeat was against the current WBC champion, Sebastian Fundora, in April 2022. Lubin, 29, has secured victories over Jeison Rosario and Jesus Ramos. His other defeat was against Jermell Charlo in 2017, in a fight for the WBC super welterweight title, which resulted in a first-round knockout. Lubin will seek to surprise and obtain the most important victory of his career, maintaining his goal of becoming a world champion.

This is the moment I’ve been waiting for. This fight is about redemption; I’m back for everything.
