Claudia Sheinbaum Reveals Details About the Detention of Julio César Chávez Jr.
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported this Friday that the arrest of boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. is due to an arrest warrant issued in 2023. Sheinbaum explained that the reason it had not been executed before is because Chávez Jr. had mostly resided in the United States. According to U.S. authorities, Chávez Jr. was arrested for overstaying his visa and for providing false information on his application for a permanent resident card. He is currently in expedited deportation proceedings.Sheinbaum, during her daily press conference, referred to the charges faced by Chávez Jr. for arms and drug trafficking. The 39-year-old boxer was arrested on Wednesday by a large number of federal agents while riding a scooter in front of a residence in Studio City, Los Angeles, according to his lawyer Michael Goldstein. The arrest occurred a few days after the former middleweight champion lost a fight.Chávez Jr. divided his time between both countries. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security detailed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained the boxer for overstaying his tourist visa, which he obtained in August 2023 and expired in February 2024. The agency also indicated that Chávez Jr. submitted multiple fraudulent statements when applying for permanent residency on April 2, 2024, based on his marriage to Frida Muñoz, a U.S. citizen. Muñoz is the mother of a granddaughter of the drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, currently incarcerated. U.S. officials believe that Chávez Jr. has links to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, which is blamed for a significant part of the drug-related violence in Mexico.The hope is that he will be deported and serve the sentence in Mexico.
