The boxing world mourns the loss of a legend. Ricky Hatton, former world champion, was found dead at his home, according to reports from the coroner’s court. The 46-year-old boxer was found unresponsive by his manager, Paul Speak, on the morning of September 14th at his residence in Hyde, Greater Manchester. This was reported during a brief ten-minute hearing at Stockport Coroner’s Court. Alison Mutch, senior coroner for Manchester South, opened and adjourned the inquest into the death of the renowned former champion until March. The provisional cause of death is hanging. The court heard details of the discovery of Hatton’s body, presented by police coroner Alison Catlow. It was revealed that Hatton’s family last saw him on September 12, and they assured that he was “fine”. However, on the morning of September 14, when Hatton did not show up at an event as expected, his manager went to his house to take him to Manchester Airport, from where he would take a flight to Dubai. The former world champion’s family insisted that Hatton was “in a good place”, being a loving father and grandfather with plans for the future, including a comeback fight in Dubai in December, with his bags already packed. His death left his family devastated and his followers shocked. Proud of Manchester and a fervent supporter of Manchester City, tributes multiplied from the boxing world and the sports community in general. Last week, personalities such as Liam Gallagher, Oasis frontman, former Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen, and boxers Tyson and Tommy Fury, attended a memorial service at Manchester Cathedral. Hatton, known as “The Hitman”, was loved by thousands of fans. His energetic fighting style and approachable personality made him one of the most popular boxers on both sides of the Atlantic.
