Tragedy in Japanese Boxing: Two Fighters Die After Event in Tokyo
The boxing world is in mourning following the deaths of two Japanese boxers, Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa, who suffered brain injuries during fights on the same card held at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on August 2nd. Kotari, 28, fought a 12-round bout against the junior lightweight champion of the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation, Yamato Hata, which ended in a draw. After the fight, Kotari lost consciousness and underwent brain surgery to treat a subdural hematoma, an accumulation of blood between the skull and the brain. Unfortunately, his death was announced on Friday due to the injuries sustained.Urakawa, also 28 years old, lost his life on Saturday after suffering brain injuries in his knockout defeat to Yoji Saito. Urakawa also underwent a craniotomy to treat a subdural hematoma.Rest in peace, Shigetoshi Kotari.
