Terence “Bud” Crawford, New Champion, Receives Ticket for Reckless Driving

Newly crowned super middleweight boxing champion Terence “Bud” Crawford, a native of Omaha, was cited for reckless driving early Sunday morning, just hours after a parade in his honor downtown.

The Omaha Mayor, John Ewing, and Police Chief, Todd Schmaderer, issued a statement on Sunday reporting that a review of traffic stops has been ordered and that Schmaderer has authorized an internal affairs investigation.

The statement indicates that the authorities are aware of a video circulating on social media related to Crawford’s arrest. A spokesperson for the Omaha police confirmed that the video comes from a cell phone of someone inside Crawford’s vehicle and that the Omaha police have not released any video.

According to the statement, police stopped a vehicle that they said was driving recklessly shortly before 1:30 a.m. While speaking with the driver, an officer saw a firearm on the driver’s side floor. The four people in the car were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

The driver was later identified as Crawford, who was fined for reckless driving. A passenger, a member of Crawford’s security team, was also found to be carrying a legally owned firearm. The police clarified that all occupants have legal permits to carry weapons.

The statement adds that a supervisor and a police lieutenant responded to the scene at Crawford’s request.

Crawford, who turned 38 on Sunday, could not be reached for comment.

Nebraska residents have been celebrating Crawford for the past two weeks, following his unanimous decision victory over Canelo Álvarez. With this victory, Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) became the first male boxer in the four-belt era to be undisputed champion in three weight classes.

Last Saturday, he led the Nebraska football team in their “tunnel walk,” wearing a “168” jersey that represented his undisputed crown in the 168-pound weight category.
