Gennadiy Golovkin Assumes World Boxing Presidency with Eyes on the 2028 Olympics
Former boxing champion Gennadiy Golovkin, known for participating in some of the sport’s most lucrative fights, is set to assume the presidency of the new body in charge of managing the Olympic tournaments at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
Golovkin, initially scheduled to compete against Greek official Mariolis Charilaos in a vote for the presidency of World Boxing in Rome, became the only eligible candidate after an evaluation process, as announced by the organization on Friday.
The former middleweight champion from Kazakhstan was considered the favorite, especially after leading a World Boxing delegation to rebuild relations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC had hinted at the possibility of excluding boxing from the Olympic program for 2028.
Golovkin, who won an Olympic silver medal in 2004, had a distinguished professional career, being a world champion for a long time and finishing with a record of 42-2-1.
World Boxing, which was founded in 2023 amid a dispute between the IOC and the International Boxing Association, did not specify the reasons why Charilaos ceased to be a candidate.
