Gennadiy Golovkin Assumes World Boxing Presidency with Eyes on the 2028 Olympics
Former boxing champion Gennadiy Golovkin, known for his high-profile fights, will assume the presidency of the new body in charge of managing boxing tournaments at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Golovkin, initially scheduled to compete against Greek official Mariolis Charilaos in a vote in Rome for the presidency of World Boxing, became the only eligible candidate after an evaluation process, the organization announced on Friday.
The former middleweight champion from Kazakhstan was considered the favorite, after leading a World Boxing delegation to rebuild relations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which had hinted at the possibility of excluding boxing from the Olympic program for 2028.
Golovkin, who won an Olympic silver medal in 2004, had a distinguished professional career, being a world champion for a long time and finishing with a record of 42-2-1.
World Boxing, founded in 2023 amid a dispute between the IOC and the International Boxing Association, did not specify the reasons why Charilaos was no longer a candidate.
